About Parson's Dance "Remember Me"
Commissioned largely by the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation and Dr. and Mrs. Edward J. Prostic, in honor and memory of their daughter Elizabeth Anne Prostic, Remember Me is the awe-inspiring performance dedicated to Elizabeth's unassailable spirit, her passion for life, and her love of Parsons Dance. In collaboration with the East Village Opera Company, Parsons Dance seamlessly braids David Parsons' contemporary choreography with re-imagined classical arias; in the modern re-telling of a tragic love story. Remember Me combines the unlikely union of rock music, classical opera, and contemporary dance into an ambitious theatrical experience. Back by popular demand, the cast of Remember Me is poised to enthrall Augusta one last time before the show is retired from the touring circuit.

Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History Featured Artist Silbert Dyer Webcasts from Mississippi

The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History Featured Artist for September is Silbert Dyer.

Silbert's opening was scheduled for Sunday, August 8 but Silbert had to be in Mississippi on that day. Undeterred, Silbert arranged with the museum to Webcast live to the museum from his hotel in Mississippi. Patrons were able to see and listen to Silbert as he expressed his appreciation to his friends, familiy and fans. Silbert gave a brief presentation of his art exhibition and wrapped up with a question/answer period. Museum patrons were very appreciative and excited about the entire event.

Plans are for the museum to incorporate webcasting into more programs and events in the future. Webcasting is part of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum's long range plan to incoporate new media to introduce and enlighten as many people as possible to our African-American heritage and history...so stay tuned...we are on the move!
Jessye Norman lends talent to benefit

Concert raised funds for Jessye Norman School for the Arts

(LaTina Emerson, Augusta Chronicle 07/02/09)
Stellar musical performances of all genres filled the halls of the Sacred Heart Cultural Center on Sunday afternoon. The benefit concert for the Jessye Norman School of the Arts included selections by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Damien Sneed, opera singer Laquita Mitchell, vocalist D.L. Barksdale, the Sounds Unlimited Band, Eleventhe Hour and even Norman herself. The international opera star sang, played piano and led the crowd in the hymn Amazing Grace.

Designed to raise money for the arts school named in Norman’s honor, the concert named Augusta’s Greatest for Augusta’s Youth drew a crowd of 450 people from the local area.

The event also featured a contemporary gospel medley by the Mount Calvary Children and Youth Choir, where Norman was a member during her childhood in Augusta.

The Rachel Longstreet Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, opened the Jessye Norman School of the Arts in 2003 as part of its mission to bring the arts to children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to experience them.

Joshua Torran, a third-year student at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts, said the school “has been a great inspiration” in his life and has provided the opportunity to learn about drama, dance, vocals and the guitar.

"The Jessye Norman School of the Arts means more to me than just the arts. It has given me a chance to meet others who have the same interests as I do. When the Jessye Norman School of the Arts comes to mind, I think of a place of happiness where students like me can dream of a future career in the arts," Torran said.

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, Georgia is pleased to present the opening of the 30th annual A Sense of Place Juried Fine Art Competition and Exhibition on Friday, September 17, 2010. A Sense of Place seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists.

This year’s juror is Ms. Betsy Cain, Savannah, Georgia-based artist. Ms. Cain reviewed a total of 669 entries from 36 states, selecting 57 works from throughout the United States for inclusion in this year’s exhibition. Cain will select three particularly outstanding works of art for receipt of cash merit awards, to be announced at the opening reception on September 17, and will conduct a gallery talk on the juried exhibition for guests. A Sense of Place 2010 will remain on view through October 15, 2010.

"The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is committed to showing the best contemporary work, and part of that commitment is reflected in the Institute’s advocacy for displaying some of the finest examples of modern art. A Sense of Place has earned a reputation as a superior juried competition and exhibition, thanks in large part to the quality of entries received and the repute of jurors used", said Rebekah Henry, Executive Director.

This annual national juried fine art competition and exhibition reinforces the Institute’s seventy-three year legacy, providing professional exhibition opportunities for emerging and professional artists alike, and reveals a provocative glimpse of the state of art today.
About "13 Most Beautiful...Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Test's with Live Musical Accompaniment by Dean & Britta"
Andy Warhol is widely regarded as the most important artist of the second half of the 20th century, and he brought the vision of a successful artist to his filmmaking activities. Andy Warhol's Screen Tests are beautiful and revealing portraits of different individuals, shot between 1963 and 1966. The subjects-both famous and anonymous- were visitors to his studio, the Factory. They were asked to pose, lit with a strong keylight, and filmed by Warhol with his stationary 16mm Bolex camera on silent, black and white, 100-foot rolls of film. Each screen test lasted only as long as the roll of film. The resulting 2¾ minute films were projected in slow motion so that each lasted four minutes.

13 Most Beautiful...Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests is a project jointly commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Indie rock luminaries Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips have composed music for thirteen of Warhol's four-minute, silent film portraits, the Screen Tests, which takes the form of a multimedia performance featuring large scale video projection of the Screen Tests above the musicians performing live on stage.

The first performances took place at the Byham Theatre in Pittsburgh in September, 2008. Dean & Britta have now performed the Warhol Screen Test show over fifty times around the world, from Lincoln Center in New York to the Barbican in London to the Sydney Opera House. The Augusta premiere of 13 Most Beautiful is made possible by a generous grant from The Porter Fleming Foundation.

Semi-Precious Productions is a joint venture between Matthew Buzzell, Coco Rubio, and Kristi and Eric Kinlaw. Their mission is to host arts events in unique spaces that combine and celebrate cinema, music, and cuisine.
More About The Whiskey Painters of America
W.P.A. was founded in the mid 50’s by industrial designer Joe Ferriot. His hectic traveling and business demands frustrated him with the lack of time to paint. So he came up with an idea. He created a small palette the size of an aspirin box with a tiny brush and cut small pocket sized pieces of watercolor paper that would fit in his shirt pocket. He would use these materials when he was in airport lounges or waiting areas throughout the country. To entertain and amaze the people around him he would dip his brush in whatever he was drinking at the time and create miniature masterpieces. He never had to buy a drink after that and his paintings became very sought after commodities. In a bar in New York City in the early 60’s he was having a drink with John Pike and some of New York’s top artists when he pulled his newly invented miniature equipment out of his pocket, dipped his brush into a martini, and created what was then dubbed an official "Whiskey Painting".

Greater Augusta Arts Council Announces People Who Must Reunion at Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival

                September 18, 2010, 8pm

Greater Augusta Arts Council is pleased to announce that there will be a People Who Must reunion concert Saturday September 18th, 8pm at the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival.

People Who Must hasn’t performed live in 8 years. The band which was formed by Joe Stevenson in 1989 played more than 1000 shows in at least 65 cities across 18 states. They released 4 EPs and four-full length albums, two that were distributed nationally by Los Angeles based label Creativeman Disc.

The band was comprised of a number of musicians over the years, but Stevenson was the one constant. From the inception of the band right up to this most current incarnation, Stevenson has remained the group’s only front man. In addition to lead vocals, Stevenson also plays guitar and harmonica. During the band’s heyday in the mid to late 1990’s the group has also included John Kolbeck on guitar, Tim Arbisi on bass, David Plunkett on bass, and Russell Jarrett on drums. All still play music but only Kolbeck will be able to participate in the 2010 reunion. To complete the four person band Stevenson called on long-time friends Ruskin Yeargain, who still regularly covers People Who Must music at his gigs to play bass and Ryan Henderson, who’s band 420 Outback had planned to cover People Who Must’s first album- "The Road You Travel" in its entirety.

Admittance to the People Who Must Reunion Concert will be included in the price of an Arts in the Heart of Augusta weekend badge. Badges cost $7 at the gate and children under 10 are free.
Special guest interviews with Mike Deas of Augusta Amusements and Maestro Shizuo Z Kuwahara, Music Director of Symphony Orchestra Augusta. Mike introduces the upcoming screening of "the Wizard of Oz" scheduled for July 17, 2010 at Fort Discovery's Paul Simon Theatre. Maestro Z introduces tonight's production at Lake Oconee and the other upcoming SOA events.
More about the Augusta Amusements
Augusta Amusements was created in 1931. The company owned and operated downtown theatres which included, most notably, the Miller, Modjeska, Imperial, Dreamland and Rialto along with several drive-ins. Their mission was to bring family entertainment to our community. Unfortunately, the company dissolved in 1967 after a thirty-six year stellar history.

The new Augusta Amusements intends to return to the company's roots, bringing live entertainment to Augusta's performance venues, exhibiting classic films, and supporting aspiring young entertainers in the attainment of their dreams.
More about Symphony Orchestra Augusta
2008-09 marked a pivotal time in the Symphony’s history. After 18 seasons as Music Director, and only the second since the Symphony’s founding, Donald Portnoy retired. The Music Director Search Committee, chaired by Peter Klacsmann, invited guest candidates to conduct the first four Masterworks: Susan Haig, Benjamin Loeb, Shizuo Z Kuwahara, and Diane Wittry. Maestro Portnoy conducted the final two Masterworks; his accomplishments were honored throughout the season. Concertmaster for 19 years, Ryan Kho, retired and was recognized at the final concerts. In tribute to Mr. Kho, The Ryan Kho Concertmaster Chair was initiated in August 2009 by W. Charles & Patricia Moye.

2009-2010 brings A New Era with the appointment of Shizuo Z Kuwahara as our new Music Director. In that vein, the Board, with his encouragement, adopted a new name and logo. SOA has refined its mission statement, redefined its objectives, and rededicated itself to the spirit of the orchestra. The Symphony Series (formerly Masterworks) features music of John Williams, Hindemith, Rachmaninoff, Kernis, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Bruckner, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Sibelius, Nielson, Bizet, Mahler, and, the Georgia premier of Schwantner’s Chasing the Light...Maestro Kuwahara especially showcases our principals and the orchestra, and his programming for Pops and Family Fun concerts shares the art form in unique ways. Principal musicians are featured in the Columbia County Music Series. In May, the 6th annual Pops! Under the Stars, a free outdoor concert in Evans is presented, thanks to University Health Care System & Columbia County Community & Leisure Services. Symphony Orchestra Augusta annually touches over 100,000 individuals through its diversified programming. The SOA reaches thousands more through Georgia Public Radio broadcasts of concert selections throughout each season.
Craft Emergency Relief Fund Co -founder, Carol Sedestrom Ross has Died.

                July 14, 2010

Dear Friends,

We are very sad to announce that CERF+ co-founder, Carol Sedestrom Ross, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Monday in Houston, Texas.

Carol was THE mover and shaker in the craft field. Anytime she took something on, that “something” happened. Whether it was an economic survey of the impact of craft on our economy or starting an art school in Mexico, those of us who had her involved in a project were truly fortunate to have her energy, commitment, intelligence, and fearlessness.

In 1985, Carol decided that there was a clear need to institutionalize the passing of the hat she witnessed at almost every show to help exhibiting craft artists who were dealing with emergencies in their lives. She recognized that too often this gesture was the only safety-net that self-employed artists had. By creating the Craft Emergency Relief Fund, she ensured that craft artists would always have funds and other help to count on when their careers were threatened with events such as fire, theft, natural disaster, accident, and illness. Twenty-five years later, CERF+ has helped hundreds of artists with over $1 million in grants, loans, and other services.

With CERF+ in the midst of celebrating its 25th anniversary, the news of Carol’s death has hit us all very hard. Clearly CERF+ would not have happened without Carol. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Adrian, her two daughters and three grandchildren.

Sincerely,

Josh Simpson
CERF+ Co-Founder

Small-Budget Charities Face IRS Filing Deadline of May 15th

                Dear SAAN Members,

I wanted to make sure you knew about a new IRS rule that requires non-profits with under $25,000 in income a year to file a 990. See the link below:

http://news.suite101.com/article.cfm/small-budget-charities-face-irs-filing-deadline-of-may-15th-a235639

Basics To Know to Avoid Automatic Loss of Exemption for Not Filing 990 Form with IRS

Here are basics for filing 990 forms if your tax-exempt organization generally has annual revenue of less than $25,000.

Do I need to file? Yes. The law governing smaller non-profits changed in 2006, effective in 2010. In theory, any tax-exempt organization with under $25,000 should have filed in 2007, 2008 and 2009. However, it’s possible to still avoid the dreaded consequences of “three consecutive years” of lapsed filing, which is loss of the tax-exempt status.

When do I need to take action to keep my organization's tax-exempt status? The federal tax law in general has a Saturday/Sunday holiday rule, so that if a deadline falls on the weekend, the requirement moves to the next business day. So while the law says May 15th is the IRS filing date for organizations under $25,000, in 2010 actually you have until Monday 17th.

Is it possible to retrieve federal tax-exempt status after the IRS revokes it on the basis of failing to file for three consecutive years? Yes, but follow the IRS guidelines for reinstatement.

Is it time consuming to file with the IRS if you haven’t done so for three years in a row? The IRS has made it easy to submit electronically. Andrew Burke of the IRS in Washington offers some reassurance to those who might have to scramble at the last minute to file. He said, "The e-post card is very simple. It has just 8 lines that have to be completed." And, he’s right, the e-postcard asks for such basic information as your organization’s name and mailing address, and the EIN number. It takes less than ten minutes to fill out. "It’s not a tax return, its an information return," says Burke.

Is it expensive to file with the IRS if your tax-exempt organization has not done so for three years in a row? No. If you get your paperwork in on time, it’s free.

What else do I need to know? The IRS offers "Guidelines for Using the Online Tax Filing for Non Profits (Epostcard)." They note that you can only use it to file for tax year 2007 (or later); that your organization must normally have gross receipts of $25,000 or less, and that your organization must not be a private foundation. (They also stipulate that if your organization is registered as 509(a)(3) supporting organization, its gross receipts must normally be $5,000 or less and it must only support religious organizations

If your organization has under $25,000 in revenue, please make sure you protect your tax exempt status and file!
Mike introduces the upcoming "Classic Movie Night: Screening: From Here to Eternity" scheduled for Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Fort Discovery's Paul Simon Theatre followed by "A Salute to Merle Travis: An Evening with Thom Bresh."

More about Thom Bresh: An Entertainer Who Happens To Play the Guitar
From a Southern California stage at the age of three, with a loosely strung ukulele, to one of the many great concert halls in the world today, armed with his two sided Langejans "Super Dualette" guitar (he refers to it as “My Band”), Thom Bresh, the 2001 inductee into the "Thumbpickers Hall of Fame" and his six string friends have been entertaining people for a lifetime. Whether he is leaning against a wall telling you how his day went or shaking the walls of a concert hall with that famous hard driving thumb, first and foremost, you will be entertained. He is equally at home on stage in a stadium or on a couch in someone's living room. Add to this scenario a deep, witty and gritty singing voice set in the middle of that relentless, powerful groove and you have a genuine force to deal with.

Arts Presenting and the New Realities
May 3, 2010 12:30pm - 5:15pm

Join us for this FREE seminar as part of the Georgia Assembly of Community Arts Agencies' (GACAA) "Jump StART" annual conference.

Note: Conference registration is required to attend this special seminar.

The performing arts field is in a time of deep change - what are our new realities? Will things continue to shift or is this the "new normal"? This spring a dynamic set of conversations will launch across the U.S. that address change and how we deal with it in our communities. Arts Presenters kicks off this series with a facilitated professional development session - Arts Presenting and the New Realities - followed by an open forum at state and regional consortia meetings.

The half-day "new realities" dialogue draws upon the thought-provoking paper by leading presenter and author, Ken Foster, Thriving in An Uncertain World: Arts Presenting Change and the New Realities, which was commissioned by Arts Presenters and featured at the 2010 APAP Conference NYC. Participants explore critical change issues and opportunities and identify individual and collective action that can be taken to improve presenting at the local and regional level.

An open forum follows for participants to learn more about Arts Presenters - its programs and services - and the best ways to access the Association's services.

We look forward to seeing you on the road this spring and invite your ideas and input as always! Be sure to bring others who share your passion to bring the best of the performing arts to your community! All are welcome to share in the discussion and membership is not required.

See full Augusta, GA agenda below.
Where: Augusta Marriott Hotel and Suites, Two Tenth Street, Augusta, GA.

What: With this seminar, Arts Presenters provides a unique opportunity for members and their colleagues to work together to more effectively deal with changes that have occurred and will continue to affect the presenting field. Learn more about how the presenting environment has changed, why and how we must think differently, and how you can re-imagine yourself and your organization now. The seminar is based upon the collected input of presenters (like you) from around the country at the APAP conference last January and concepts for thinking differently and how to make practical applications. The day will focus on actions and solutions for you to take away. A follow-up webinar for seminar participants will take place next fall.

Who: Neil Barclay - President and CEO of the National Black Arts Festival (and Founding President and CEO of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture) - will facilitate the day. Kari Ardolino Rudgers, Chief Members Officer; and Scott Stoner, Chief Programs Officer, Association of Performing Arts Presenters will also contribute to the dialogue.

Advance Preparation: Participants are requested to download, read and bring to the session a printed copy of Thriving in an Uncertain World: Presenting Change and the New Realities, by Ken Foster (the paper is freely accessible here.)

Structure of the Afternoon
12:30pm - 3:45pm [we welcome you to bring lunch with you so we can begin promptly at 12:30pm] Neil Barclay will guide participants through large and small group explorations of the following: 1) key stressors (nationally, regionally, and locally) that have brought about change in the way we do business as presenters; 2) why and how to view your organizations as a resilient organization; 3) identify what you are already doing and where change is needed; and, 4) identify what you plan to do that will positively affect your organization’s health and sustainability.

3:45pm - 4:00pm Break

4:00pm - 5:15pm Review individual action plans with peers that include at least one key thing each participant will do (and the timeframe for completion). Kari Rudgers and Scott Stoner will engage participants in an open forum discussion about future professional development, networking, and resources available through APAP programs and services (including APAP’s newly launched web site) and other strategies and opportunities at national, regional and local levels.

Arts Weekly Host Brenda Durant of the Greater Augusta Arts Council covers arts events for the week of April 3, 2009. Special guest interviews with Richard Justice, Executive Director for Le Chat Noir and Ashley Petite. Richard and Ashley preview the upcoming production of Del Shores "Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife" opening April 9, 2010. Listen Now!

Del Shores' 2003 play explores the hidden emotions, shame, and secrecy of battered women, while also offering hope, healing, and truth. A delicate blend of frightened humor and pain, the three act play delves right into the heart of domestic abuse. From hysterical highs, to the depths of tragic lows, the play sweeps the emotional spectrum. Shores draws the audience into the fire, allowing them to experience the emotion from all sides -- the abuser, the abused, and the powerless bystander.

Del Shores has crafted a superb play grounded in his Southern Baptist background. While his unerring ear for the sounds, the life, the joys and strains of a hard scrabble Texas existence bring laughter and tears, his research on domestic violence brings horror. This is not theater for the faint of heart.

The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife is presented through a special arrangement by Samuel French, Inc. 45 West 25th Street New York, N.Y. 10010
