Thomas Crowther’s “2nd Act” Unveils a Psychedelic Journey through the
Human Form at CANDL Fine Art, Augusta, GA

Augusta, GA — CANDL Fine Art is thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition, “2nd Act,” featuring the rich works of Augusta-based artist Thomas Crowther. The exhibition will run from February 2 to March 15, 2024, with an opening reception scheduled for Friday, February 2, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Born in Chester, England Crowther grew up in Northwest England/North Wales and attended English and Welsh schools. Along with his immediate family he emigrated from Great Britain to the U.S in his teen years. Once settled in Augusta, GA, Crowther completed high school and earned his BFA at Augusta State University soon after. As a student at Augusta State University his passion for painting and drawing was truly recognized. Feeling a change of scenery was needed Crowther then moved for graduate studies to rural Radford, Virginia located among the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. While attending Radford University he continued to study painting and drawing under Dr. Halide Salam and earned his MFA. While living in the small mountain town Crowther recognized the similarities between the topography of Appalachia and the rolling hills of North Wales, which became a predominate theme in his early paintings. Crowther taught at Augusta University (not Augusta STATE University; a notable difference and distinction should be made), from 2006 to 2021 until the Covid-19 Pandemic started. Feeling yet another change/challenge was needed, Crowther started working, post-pandemic, on both the Academic level and in public education. As well as teaching, he exhibits regularly, mostly in the southeastern United States including Georgia, Virginia, Washington, D.C, Florida, and South Carolina, and is active in the local Augusta art community. His work is heavily focused around experiences in both Great Britain and the landscape of the Deep South, creating large nostalgic oil paintings, melding both regions into loose autobiographical narratives. Crowther is also a keen painter of the nude figure, which he attributes to his mentor and friend Philip Morsberger (a former Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford University), Lucian Freud, Euan Uglow, Manet, and The California Bay Area Figurative Painters (notably Richard Diebenkorn and Elmar Bischoff).

”2nd Act” promises to be a captivating exploration of the human form, transcending traditional boundaries to unveil a vivid, organic, and multi-colored psychological landscape. Crowther’s artistic vision transforms familiar shapes into a frolic of vibrant hues, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world of visual storytelling.

CANDL Fine Art operates under a specific, unique mission: to elevate the awareness of art and importantly, the artists, living and working in the greater Central Savannah River Area. Working with downtown entrepreneur Amy Donaldson, gallery founder Drake White has created a space to showcase national and international caliber work by local artists whose work is rarely displayed in their hometown.

“Our intent is to foster community and contribute to its continuity by showing significant exhibitions supported by active and learned discussion about all things art, but specifically the visual arts. Access to art is more vital than ever for those who have made a commitment to this lifestyle. Their contribution should be honored and more importantly supported. We hope to bring value to the artist and the places where they live and work,” White said. According to White each exhibition will be enhanced by artist talks and other events designed to engage, entertain and educate those seeking an active role in elevating their understanding and experience about art and the people who make it.

Other artists committed to upcoming exhibitions in the coming year at CANDL include Philip Morsberger and Mark Albertin
