Art Advocacy and Inclusion
–The 523 Gallery and Walton Options is proud to announce an upcoming art exhibition that celebrates the remarkable talents of individuals with disabilities. This event will feature the works of artist Lois Curtis. The exhibition will take place on July 13, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at The 523 Gallery, located at 523 13th St., Augusta, GA 30901.

About Lois Curtis
Lois Curtis was an admired artist known for her expressive self- portraits. Diagnosed with intellectual and mental health disabilities at a young age, Curtis spent much of her early life in institutions. Her determination to live independently led to her becoming the lead plaintiff in the landmark Olmstead v. L.C. decision. The Olmstead decision, a 1999 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, states that unjustified segregation of people with disabilities is unlawful discrimination under the ADA. It requires states to provide community-based services for disabled individuals when such placement is appropriate, the person does not oppose it, and it can be reasonably accommodated considering available resources and the needs of others with disabilities. This decision has significantly promoted community integration and reduced unnecessary institutionalization.
