Photo og a metal sculpture that is painted orange and green. It is in the shape of a flame. In the background there is a stone laid hill that leads to a path, hotel and office building.
Oraiste agus Liath by Aisling McDonald post Hurricane Helene

I got a promotion right before the hurricane came through Augusta. I am now the Gallery & Public Art Director with the Greater Augusta Arts Council. No more marketing/newsletter/social media/press releases/etc. I get to just focus on building the arts in my community and working with artists to make that happen. Which, honestly, is pretty perfect.

My first task in this new role, post hurricane, was to go around and check on the Augusta Sculpture Trail and murals I could access downtown. Luckily, our sculptures looked pretty unscathed for the most part. They narrowly missed falling trees. Some got a little river rinse with the water rising at one point. For the most part though, they were all looking good all things considered. I haven’t been able to check on all of the Art the Boxes yet, as there is still lots of debris around the city blocking off paths and sight lines.

It’s been an interesting first few weeks, I tell yah what.

For a while there we didn’t have internet. So our offices all got a deep clean. I moved into Denise’s old office and am excited to repaint and make it more “public arty.” We also have new staff to train in new roles. Denise and I are now the veteran employees.

My first projects will be a new sculpture trail in 2025, a new Golden Blocks mural ribbon cutting, Gateway Sculpture installation at Sand Bar Ferry Road and calls for more Gateway Sculptures to go in at Douglas Barnard Pkwy and Alexander Drive/Riverwatch Pkwy. I also have tons of ideas for new projects like another mural festival, collaborations, temporary installations, performance art, live art making, tours, and much more.

If you know me, I am an idea girl.

If you are a local artist that wants to get more involved with public art, please consider applying to future upcoming calls. There is a process, as the City of Augusta’s Public Art Agency, that we have to abide by, but I am always willing to have a sit down and talk and try to help where I can. Public Art Advisory Panels will be back to meeting regularly soon.

In 2025 we will be making some updates to our Promenade & Paint Experience. Our mural for this year’s batch of experience-goers is ALMOST complete. If you want to join us in November or December to help us finish, get your tickets soon! Click here find dates and to purchase tickets. OR enter to win FREE tickets by taking our Public Art Survey! Let us know what YOU want to see in Augusta’s River Region. Click here to take the survey.

That’s the word,

Now go enjoy public art!
