12 Feb New Fiber Art School in Graniteville, SC Seeks Instructors and Volunteers
Augusta-area artists who work with fibers & fabric, this one’s for you! A group of artists is working on bringing a center for textile arts to the Better World Studios in Graniteville, South Carolina. They are looking for instructors and volunteers who will assist with events and classes. Do you crochet, knit, weave, make lace, or use fabric in your creative work? They want to hear from you!
Local artist Emily Bender ([email protected]) and a group of dedicated fiber artists are in the first steps of creating the school and writing its charter. The location is a strategic choice, being central to the CSRA, as well as one with historic ties. Graniteville was once home to one of the region’s oldest cotton manufacturing mills and a hub of the industry in the Southeast, until the tragic train crash of 2005 shuttered the facility. The school seeks to reinvigorate the local interest in textiles and knit together the local community through the teaching of these traditional crafts.
“Textile Arts” is a wide category of crafts that can include sewing, weaving, knitting, crochet, embroidery, tatting, lace-making, macramé, spinning, felting, quilting, dying, tufting, pattern-making, multi-disciplinary fiber art, and more. If you’re interested in being involved in the school, taking classes, or instructing, please reach out to Emily Bender at [email protected]
