Meet Sameera Lauren Mackey:
Our Youth Featured Artist of the Month

Dancer. Designer. Dreamer. Daughter of Resilience.

“Being different is cool. Be yourself  always.”

These are the words that guide 18-year-old Sameera Laurin Mackey, a graduating senior from Augusta, Georgia who has quietly and courageously become a symbol of strength, creativity, and evolving artistry.

She is a dancer. A fashion girl. A young woman with an old soul, full of wisdom born from deep love and unspeakable loss. And now, as she prepares to step into the next phase of life, Sameera does so with an open heart, a steady mind, and a spirit that cannot be dimmed.

“I just want to be there for people who need it,” she shares. “Because I know how it feels when you feel like you don’t have anyone.”

A LIFE IN MOTION

Dance was Sameera’s first love, a connection nurtured from the earliest days of childhood.

“My mother enrolled me in dance at a young age, and from there it became one of my passions,” she says.

She remembers dancing to whatever song played around the house, often recording herself or being filmed by her mother, who saw something special in her daughter’s rhythm and presence.

Fashion came later but grew just as fiercely. What started as play, styling outfits and experimenting with trends quickly bloomed into something intentional and expressive. Over time, it evolved into a calling, a pathway to not just personal style but a creative future she hopes to design with boldness and originality. “It’s something I want to take seriously,”Sameera says. “I want to be a fashion designer or stylist and pursue dance professionally. Both are part of who I am.”  Despite years of training and passion, it wasn’t until recently that she truly claimed the title of artist. “I’d say this year, honestly. I’ve grown so much. I’ve faced challenges that made me evolve. I had to overcome so much just to get here but now, I know who I am.”

GRIEF, TRANSFORMATION, AND THE FIGHT TO KEEP GOING

Sameera’s junior year of high school brought a devastating loss, the death of her mother, her anchor and greatest supporter. That kind of pain could have derailed her. But instead, she found a deeper strength and a new clarity about her purpose. “Losing my mom changed everything,” she reflects. “It opened my eyes to the good and the bad, especially about myself. But I promised I would keep going and make her proud.” Her journey led her to a new home taken in by her dance teacher, who became her godmother. The transition brought with it complex emotions: gratitude, displacement, hope, and loneliness, all coexisting.

“They welcomed me like family, and I appreciate everything they’ve done. But there are days when I still feel out of place,” she admits. “Adjusting to a new family, a new rhythm… it’s hard when you’re used to something completely different.” But amid the change, dance remained her constant.

“It’s the way I let everything out, everything I bottle up,” she shares. “It kept me close to my mother, because she’s the one who got me into it. It’s how I feel her with me.”

FAITH, DISCIPLINE & CREATIVE POWER

Sameera doesn’t pretend it’s been easy. Living with diabetes while juggling school, dance, grief, and aspirations requires incredible strength and discipline. But she’s intentional about balance, monitoring her health, prioritizing rest, and making space for joy even in difficult seasons.

Her inspiration is deeply rooted in her mother’s strength, a woman who battled illness with grace while raising two children and in her relationship with God.

“Jesus, that’s who keeps me going,” she says. “When He wakes me up every day, that’s my reminder that I have another chance to make something of myself.”

She also finds motivation in music. From “St. Chroma” by Tyler the Creator to the emotional, faith-filled songs of Christian artist Sondae, music has been a soundtrack to her healing.

“Sondae’s music carried me through my mom’s final days. Every word just… connected.”

WHEN THE STAGE BECOMES SANCTUARY

To see Sameera dance is to witness a sacred release. Her body becomes language fluent in feeling, fluent in faith. “When I’m dancing, I feel free. Calm. It’s a safe space. I can speak through movement when I can’t with words.”Her performances are deeply personal, yet universally resonant  telling stories of joy, sorrow, resistance, and triumph without uttering a word.

She is not simply performing; she is testifying.

THE FUTURE IS HER CANVAS

As she approaches graduation, Sameera juggles multiple commitments, school, rehearsals, health routines, and her dreams with grace.

“I just make sure I rest and find time to enjoy what I’m doing,” she says. “If I’m not having fun or growing, what’s the point?” Beyond her creative goals, she’s guided by an inner compass one shaped by emotional intelligence, empathy, and a keen awareness of others.

“People don’t know how in tune I am emotionally,” she says. “I’m not always open, but when I do speak, I feel everything, mine and other people’s.”

Her dream is to leave a legacy through fashion and dance not just of beauty or excellence, but of purpose. She hopes to inspire young people who, like her, may be quietly fighting battles most can’t see.

“I want them to know it’s okay to feel everything. It’s okay to cry. Don’t rush your healing. Just keep going.”

REDEFINING FAMILY, RECLAIMING HOME

Sameera’s understanding of family has expanded. Through her experience, she’s come to realize that blood isn’t the only bond that matters. “You don’t have to be related to be considered family,” she reflects. “Sometimes, people outside your family show up for you in ways your own won’t.” This redefinition has shaped her sense of belonging, complicated at times, but rooted in love, care, and acceptance. “It’s made me realize that I do belong. Even when it feels weird, I’m still surrounded by people who care.”

LEAVING HER MARK

When asked what she hopes her legacy will be in Augusta, Sameera doesn’t hesitate.

“I want to be an inspiration. I want people to know that your storms can turn around. That the sun does shine again. There’s no limit to what you can do.”

Her words are more than hopeful they’re hard-earned. She speaks from lived experience, from nights full of questions and days full of determination. She speaks not just as an emerging artist, but as a young woman who has emerged from her own ashes,  still glowing, still going, still giving.

“Do it for yourself. Make yourself proud. You came into this world alone, and you’ll leave it alone. So be yourself. Create the way you want. That’s the life I’m building.”

Sameera Lauren Mackey is more than a dancer, more than a designer. She is a story in motion, living proof that even in grief, greatness grows. As Augusta watches her rise, we’re not just witnessing a star we’re witnessing a light that will guide others for years to come.
