Aniah Johnson, who sometimes goes by AJ, is a visual artist whose creativity refuses to be confined to a single medium. Originally from Atlanta, she moved to Augusta as a teenager to explore her artistic side at Davidson Fine Arts. Though recognized mainly for her visual work, her creativity extends across all areas of fine arts, constantly exploring, experimenting, and growing.
Creativity has always been a part of her life. “Using my hands to express myself has always come naturally,” she shares. But her path hasn’t been without challenges. Through her teenage years, Aniah struggled with mental health, and there were times she simply didn’t have the energy to create. Today, she channels those intense experiences into her art, transforming emotion into expression.
Curiosity fuels much of her creativity. She thrives on understanding the ways people experience life, using those perspectives to inform her work. Her process is spontaneous. “I don’t plan or put time aside to create. I just go all in as soon as I get the urge to bring my ideas to life. Sometimes, I have to step back so I don’t overwork myself,” she explains.
As a self-taught artist, Aniah is continually discovering new techniques and styles, reminding herself along the way to let go of perfectionism. Her work, described in three words—artless, besotted, and pensive—invites viewers into her personal exploration of life and emotion.
Her ultimate goal is to turn art into her main source of income, but her vision extends beyond finances. She dreams of traveling the world, meeting people, and sharing their stories through her work. “Being chosen as the Emerging Youth Featured Artist of the Month is an incredible honor. It reminds me that my voice and creativity matter, and that the stories I tell through my art can inspire, connect, and create space for others,” she says.
