Oh, hi.
Didn’t expect to see you here. Welcome.
I’m going to keep this short and sweet and tell you all a little about my experience as a featured artist in Artfields hosted annually in Lake City, SC. What is it? Well, its a pretty big art competition that features around 400 (selected down from several thousand) aritsts work from the South East. It offers almost $150,000 in cash prizes and last about 10 days. The artwork takes over the whole town (yes I said town, its basically the size of Harlem, GA with a downtown the size of Aiken, SC’s). Artfields is kind of the art version of the Masters Tournament, if that makes sense, except its free to attend.
I’ll start off by saying, the Artfields team really worked hard to get all of these pop-up galleries, local businesses, main galleries, the whole town ready for this event. It’s scale was massive, the caliber of artwork was even more impressive. I had applied on a whim after meeting the Fine Arts Manager, Kyle Coleman, when he came to visit Augusta and the Arts Council. I had maybe heard of them a couple of times and saw some friends had been in it, but had no idea how big of a deal it was until folks started high fiving me in the street (true story).
I went for both weekends, and there were several hiccups with the gallery my artwork was in and getting in touch with people, but overall, I think it’s a great experience to have, especially when you are trying to get yourself out there and apply for things. I was able to get my work in front of several thousand people, and it sold! Which is really cool. I also saw a lot of inspiring artwork (like, oh my gosh there was so much cool stuff). I think, at the very least, it would be a great art day trip, if you can make the 2.5 hour trip. I would suggest, if you are staying, BOOK A HOTEL EARLY.
Ok that’s the word. I’m tired from all the travel
