Overcriminalized: Alternatives to Incarceration –  Sept 17 | 7 – 9 PM | FREE

Hosted by The League of Women Voters of the CSRA and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta

THIRD THURSDAY SOCIAL JUSTICE FILM SERIES! OverCriminalized focuses on the people who find themselves being trafficked through this nation’s criminal justice system with little regard for their humanity and zero prospects for actual justice. They are victims of unwillingness to invest in solving major social problems, and the consequent handling off of that responsibility to the police, the courts, and the prisons. They are the mentally ill, the homeless, and the drug addicted. Sometimes they are all three.

DISCUSSION: Join us for a discussion of the current situation and how we might address these issues. Special Guests: Omeeka Loggins, State Court Solicitor | Jared Williams, Candidate for District Attorney | Natalie Payne, Incumbent and Candidate for District Attorney.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Adult Online Painting Session 10 Brushstrokes or Less with Tom Crowther –  Sept 17 | 7 – 8:30 PM | $35

Hosted by the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art

During this session students from beginners to seasoned artists will focus on brush selection and brush strokes while creating a composition using only 10 brushstrokes or less. Learning and having a basic knowledge of what size brush to select and how much paint should be loaded on the brush will not only help while blocking in a simple composition, but will also encourage the student to be less controlled and more expressive with their brush strokes. Although this exercise is geared towards the more painterly painters, it could serve as a warm up activity or as a way to break out of formulaic and fixed habits.

Session will be led by local artist Tom Crowther. Tom recieved his BFA from Augusta State University and MFA from Radford University. Visit his website thomascrowther.com to view more of his work.

Cost: $35 (Must be a GHIA Member)

Connection: Staci Swider & Amy Hart | Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art Exhibition
Exhibition Dates: September 18 – October 30, 2020
Gallery Hours: Mon – Fri, 10 AM – 5 PM | Sat by appointment only

Due to Covid-19, Gallery admission is by appointment ONLY. Please email Heather Williams at [email protected] or call 706-722-5495 to schedule a visit.

Connections: the action of linking one thing with another.

Staci Swider and Amy Hart first connected via Ciel Gallery in Charlotte, NC where they were both exhibiting members. Their work compliments each other as they are both artists who repurpose the old to create the new in colorful often unexpected ways. While Amy uses reclaimed utilitarian objects to create her three dimensional fanciful creatures, Staci uses old canvases and papers from previous works to bring her characters to life. For both women reconnecting with the past to create something new motivates their use of materials. Their new reality laced with the odd bit of whimsy that can’t help but make one smile. They create connections between the old and the new, the forgotten with the remembered, the tangible with the obscure.

Atlas Obscura: Dino 101 – Sept 18 | 9 – 10 PM | $7 – $10

Attention dinosaur nerds and science stans! Join Dustin Growick, host of the YouTube channel The Dinosaur Show, and leader of Atlas Obscura’s Dinos and Dunes in the Colorado Desert trip, and Kristina Gustovich, middle school teacher, geologist, improviser, and museum megastan, for an interactive, adults-only dinosaur party.

Each live, Friday night session of Dino 101 will have a different adult-focused, dinosaur-inspired theme, replete with a bingo board drinking game.

Since we’ll be participating from the safety of our homes, drinking and drawing and learning is very encouraged! Grab your favorite pens and/or colored pencils, because the very first thing we’ll do is intro the Dino of the Day. At the end of the adventure we’ll zoom around the room viewing your tipsy paleoart masterpieces. Next, it’s time for everyone’s favorite game, Dino or Not a Dino?!, in which we’ll put your dinosaur knowledge AND bullshit detector to the test. We’ll then mix in a mini-scavenger hunt and some interactive and irreverent paleontology trivia (e.g. Did T. rex have feathers?, Which Jurassic Park movie was the worst?, How big was a Brontosaurus member?)

Part party, part class, 100% adventure—come nerd out with the Dino 101 quaranteam as we prove why dinosaurs are the greatest group of animals to ever walk the face of the Earth.

September 18: Dinosaur Brains & Intelligence: Which dinosaur was the smartest? Which was the dumbest? Corvid expert Dr. Kaeli Swift (@corvidresearch) joins us to talk bird, dinosaur, and human intelligence as we discuss how we could possibly measure the smarts of animals who literally haven’t had brains for millions of years.
