Whoa, baby it is MARCH already! That means I am officially broken in as the Executive Director of the Greater Augusta Arts Council. Five months in and let me tell you it has been a wild and beautiful ride. I’ve been shaking hands, kissing babies (figuratively, of course), and diving deep into what our artists need, desire, and envision for this community.
I’ve been on the move just got back from speaking at a mini conference in Statesboro, popped up on two podcasts, and now I’m gearing up for the Arts Council’s weekly radio show, “Talk Artsy to Me with Denise,” launching in April on Perry Broadcasting. That’s right I’ll be on the airwaves, talking all things artsy, keeping y’all in the loop, and probably oversharing a little. Tune in you won’t regret it.
But let me tell you about a moment that truly moved me… I had the chance to help celebrate the Golden Blocks Mural“A Community Built on the Shoulders of Giants” by Theron Cartwright. This mural is a powerful tribute to our
community’s legacy, and I get so excited when collaboration happens on the community level. Remember what you want in your community will always transform your community. Let’s get this work done!
February was phenomenal so many incredible shows and celebrations of the African American Creative Experience, and I was honored to be part of it, creating opportunities for artists and soaking up all the talent. Now here we are in March Women’s History Month, so you already know I’m all about celebrating that divine feminine energy this month.
Oh, and I did a thing… The Arts Council put out a call for “The Art of Words,” pairing writers with visual artists. And, being the artist I am, I secretly submitted under a pen name just to see if I had the chops to get in. Guess what? I made it, Mama! I’m in the show! Not for money, not for fame, just for the love of the art. So come check it out at City Gallery when you get a chance!
Speaking of things you don’t want to miss, Wet Paint is happening on March 14th, and it’s going to be a whole party. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, what are you even doing?! We need artists selling work and folks coming out to support, so get in the mix! It’s going to be a VIBE.
And while we’re talking big events, we’re deep in the “Where is it going to be?” stage for Arts in the Heart 2025, so stay tuned because it’s happening. And if that weren’t enough, we’ve got a new festival on the horizon for May 2026, so Augusta, get ready!
And after all that? REST. In between work. And then more rest. Because these 56-year-old bones are feeling all this extra movement—but honestly? I’m loving every second of it. So, keep making, keep showing up, and keep pouring into the arts because this community is thriving, and I’m honored to be part of the ride.
Until then, Talk Artsy to Me
Denise
