Creative Careers: George Washington’s Mount Vernon – 2021 Spring Education Intern (Remote)

VIA The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association: The mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association is to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington, so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations.

The department of K-12 and Youth Learning is designed to ensure that George Washington’s Mount Vernon is focused on creating and providing the best learning experiences available to young people in the world today. Key staff members in the department use their expertise to develop departmental programs and projects and to support other target audience initiatives on the estate, in the library, and nation-wide that magnify our mission’s impact.

Internship Responsibilities:
The 2021 Spring Intern will virtually work to increase Mount Vernon’s understanding and continued connections to today’s K-12 classroom. The intern will work with the Lead Specialist of Student Learning to help research, design, and support student-learning focused online resources, programs, and workshops.

The intern will be responsible for researching current trends and best practices utilized within formal K-12 classrooms in regards to students learning. With findings from this research, the intern will help design new online resources, distance learning programs, and staff workshops with the K12 Education Team. Additional responsibilities can include implementation of distance learning programs and logistical/technical support for Mount Vernon experts also facilitating these programs.

  • This is a paid internship, with up to 32 hours a week at $10/hour
  • Target start and end date: February – May
  • Please note that this internship will be performed remotely, so the selected intern must have access to an internet network, computer (desktop, laptop, or tablet), and quiet workspace

Qualifications: Interest and/or experience in education pedagogy, education technology, public history, museum studies, museum education, history or related field.

How to Apply:
Please submit a cover letter and resume by January 15th. Since an internship is meant as a learning experience rather than a job, cover letters should focus on how this internship would help you in your career development, rather than your qualifications. Specifically, please emphasize:

  • Why you are interested in this particular Internship, including specific projects;
  • How this Internship will contribute to your long-term career goals;
  • How this Internship will fill gaps in your resume—how it will complement previous experience and education.
