Creative Conversations is a series of intimate discussions in the Arts Council Conference room on the second floor of the Sacred Heart Cultural Center on the third Thursday of each month. Artists and arts professionals get the chance to network and talk about hot topics that all creatives should have knowledge in. This is a great space to get your answers and learn all about what it takes to be a successful artist.
This conversation focuses on creating memorable Artist Bios and Artist Statements. Guests should plan to bring or send in a copy of their bio and/or statement for feedback and discussion.
About the Guest Speaker:
Matt Poter is a Canadian transplant who has lived in Augusta, Ga for more than a decade. Some may know him for his Secret Record Nights but most know him through his work with the Morris Museum of Art where he worked as the Curator of Education for 13+ years. Over the years, Matt has learned a lot about the Arts in Augusta and is excited to be taking on this new role at Westobou.
Prior to his work at the Morris, Matt worked at the Detroit Institute of Art and at the historic Frank Lloyd Wright house “Falling Waters.” He is a trained visual artist and is adept in a variety of media. His graphic design work on the James Brown Birthday Get Down posters and flyers is iconic.
All of this experience has given him a unique understanding of what it takes to create an amazing arts experience. In 2022, Matt was awarded the Arts Professional Award at Augusta’s Annual Arts Awards. His dedication to broadening arts programing in Augusta’s River Region is inspiring.
Matt is currently working as the Executive Director with the Westobou Gallery. Westobou opened in 2005 with the goal of bringing contemporary arts to Augusta, GA. What started out as a pop-up Festival has evolved into a season of events and exhibitions in our year-round Gallery space on Broad Street. As a non-profit arts organization, their mission is to support artists and their ideas to create engaging, creative and thought-provoking artistic experiences.
