Call for Apprentices!
Are you a creative, hands-on individual with a passion for art, digging holes, metal, and collaboration? We’re looking for dedicated apprentices to join an exciting Public Art project! What is an apprentice? One who is learning a trade, art, or calling under skilled workers.
Project Overview:
Over the next year, September Art Studios and Metal Specialists of Augusta will be fabricating and installing a large-scale Gateway sculpture that will be permanently displayed in our community along Sand Bar Ferry Rd. As apprentices, you’ll have the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with professional artists and craftsmen. You will gain valuable experience in metal fabrication, construction, installation, and other skills. This is a paid hourly position, averaging 10 hours per week. All skill levels are welcome!
Apprentice Responsibilities:
- Assist in construction, assembly, installation, and anything required and/or asked
- Attend planned meetings, events, and anything else requested
- Office work could include: documentation, research, and promotion; review drawings, schematics, or plans; billing, orders, typing, reading, paperwork, emails and organization; meetings and investor interaction;
- Shop work could include: receiving all materials and organization; cutting, forming, bolting, prepping, and other fabrication methods; blasting and powder coating
- Site work could include: preparation of all types; working under the elements or with established obstacles; under the clock due to shut-downs or other problems outside anyone’s control (Acts of God); cutting, forming, bolting, prepping, and other fabrication methods
- Obey any and all safety rules and regulations set forth by OHSA, September Art Studios, Metal Specialists of Augusta, Foreman and any other entities
- All activities are contingent upon permissions, approvals and safety requirements
Qualifications:
- Enthusiasm for art, projects, and creativity
- Basic math skills
- Ability to read a ruler and measurements is a major plus, but not required
- Willingness to learn and work, especially as part of a team
- Able to follow orders and complete them within a timely manner
- Ability to commit to a flexible schedule during project phases (may include weekends)
- Experience with tools or materials is a plus, but not required
- Ability to lift 50lbs properly
- 18 or older (no high school students)
- Valid Driver’s License or US ID
- Reliable transportation
- Health insurance is a major plus, but not required
Goals and Expectations
- Expected to attend all sessions or give advance notice if late or will not attend (will affect pay)
- Excessive tardiness or absences will lead to expulsion from the apprenticeship
- Respect for the art, this opportunity, the job, and all individuals around you
- Obtain or reach higher skill levels in numerous areas of office, shop, and site work
- Follow all safety guidelines set forth by the Artists, Owner, Foremen, OSHA, and any other entities
- After activity discussions and analyses
- Learn proper use of hand tools, power tools, machinery, etc.

This is not a job, rather a paid learning experience. Duration of involvement vary and will be discussed during interviews. Ultimately this is irregular-time apprenticeship that ends with the installation of the Gateway Sculpture.
Trial Period
A trial period of 2-4 weeks will be implemented for each apprentice. After which an evaluation will take place and the Apprentice will either be dismissed or continue on the project.
Creative Ownership & Credit
All final artworks, designs, and project materials created under this apprenticeship remain the intellectual property of September Art Studios & Metal Specialists of Augusta, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
The apprentice will be credited on project-related materials when appropriate. The apprentice may include documentation of their involvement in their portfolio with appropriate credit and only after the public release of the project.
