Plein air painting is a painting style that involves painting outdoors, in direct contact with nature and the elements. The term is French for “in the open air” and was popularized by19th century French Impressionists. Plein air painting is often associated with landscape painting, as it allows the artist to capture the impression of the natural surroundings, but can also feature figures and architecture.
Plein Air will be featured in the City Gallery, which is in the lobby of the Augusta Richmond County Municipal Building (535 Telfair St. Augusta, GA 30901) from July 11 – August 29, 2024 with a lunchtime reception held on Friday, August 2nd from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Application deadline is Friday, June 7th by 11:59 p.m. Selected participants will be notified by no later than Tuesday, June 11th by 6:00 p.m.. There are no fees to participate or submit.
Early drop off for selected works will be Monday July 8th – Wednesday July 10th at the Arts Council offices at 1301 Greene St. between 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Artists must schedule an early drop off time with Heather Dunaway by calling the Arts Council at 706-826-4702. Day of drop off for the exhibition will be from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the City Gallery on the day of hanging – Thursday, July 11, 2024. No late drop offs will be accepted or hung in this exhibition.
The City Gallery is managed by The Greater Augusta Arts Council in partnership with the City of Augusta as a visual arts space. Gallery Director Heather Dunaway acts as curator, creating unique exhibitions of local artworks. The goal being to support local artists by showcasing their artworks in a high traffic location for locals, city officials, and visitors alike to better understand the vibrant arts we have in Augusta’s River Region.
Submissions can be new or older works. All works must have been painted outdoors as a “plein air” work. Artists must reside in the following counties. Georgia: Burke, Columbia, Glascock, Hancock, Jefferson, Jenkins, Lincoln, McDuffie, Richmond, Taliaferro, Warren, Washington and Wilkes in addition to the 5 counties in western South Carolina: Aiken, Edgefield, Allendale, Barnwell and McCormick.
To be considered for this showcase the following must be met:
1. Artworks must be family friendly. Works may not feature nudity or violence of any kind.
2. Artworks must be made by the Artist submitting.
3. Artists must live in Augusta’s River Region.
4. Artworks no larger than 36 ” x 36″ or 3ft x 3ft. We have limited space available.
5. All artworks must be hangable from a Walker System, which is a rod-rail system that utilizes 4″ wide, vertically adjustable French cleats on rods suspended from a rail system. Please visit our gallery page (www.augustaarts.com/galleries) for more info.
6. All selected works must be finished, dry, presentable and ready to hang (from wire) by drop off. Please, no hole, claw or single ring hangers on frames. Works that are not compatible with the Walker System will not be hung in this showcase. All works must be labeled on the back with artist’s and artwork’s information.
7. Artists agree to the gallery’s commission is 70% / artist, 30% / gallery. Pricing provided should reflect this. There will also be a State Sales Tax of 8% added by the Arts Council for each sale. This commission helps to cover the cost of organizing, hosting and promoting the exhibition.
8. Artists must sign the City Gallery Contract and submit a W9. The Arts Council files Artist W9s for one calendar year. Artists who have submitted a W9 for other exhibitions in 2024 do not need to resubmit unless their information has changed.
All gallery sales will be processed through the Greater Augusta Arts Council. Checks for all sales will be mailed to the address of each artist (provided on their W9), or direct deposited into artist’s choice account through our system (optional).
Any sold works will be distributed to the buyers by the Greater Augusta Arts Council. Any unsold artworks will need to be picked up by the artist or a representative of the artist in the week following the close of the exhibition. All works will be need to be picked up from the gallery on August 29th between 10:00 am and 1:00 p.m. Unless otherwise arranged with the Arts Council. Any works left behind, after a 60 day period, per our contract, will be considered abandoned.
Space is limited! Each artist will be able to submit up to four works per application to be featured. This does not guarantee that all works will selected. This depends on the amount of wall space, submissions, and general feel for the show. We encourage all artists interested in showing to visit the City Gallery.
