An Tobar : The Well

Opens at CANDL Fine Art on May 19, 2023

AUGUSTA, GA – CANDL Fine Art presents an exhibition of paintings and mixed media by Leslie Hamrick, Laura McRae Hitchcock, Susan Irish, and Staci Swider May 19 – June 30 2023 with an opening reception on May 19th, 6–8 P.M.

The exhibition reflects the artistic journey of four women who traveled to Listowel, Ireland in the early part of 2023 to take part in a residency where they worked in a local gallery part time, roamed the countryside and immersed themselves in the culture of a rural township.

The result is a sprawling, yet cohesive, collection of artworks and represents the first group show at CANDL Fine Art. The group’s artistic statement:

Our relationship is a source of  nourishment like water from a deep well. We started as acquaintances meeting to support each other as artists. Now we are friends sharing, guiding, and holding space. Accepted to the same artist residency in Ireland we were able to attend in pairs: Leslie and Staci in February, Laura and Susan in March of this year.

We filled our buckets with Irish culture, landscapes, and experiences. Our collective body of work demonstrates four very different explorations, methods, and objectives, but the reverence for place, for the process, and for each other is as clear and fresh as the ancient sacred wells of Ireland.”

Leslie Hamrick is a figurative, mixed media artist who embraces exaggerated forms, strong lines and texture. Her gestural line work belies her contemplative approach guiding the viewer through her methodical process.
