Sweet Tea…and Some History is a public program featuring a presentation on the life and legacy of Matilda Arabella Evans, presented by Walter Curry.
The program highlights Dr. Evans’ groundbreaking contributions as South Carolina’s first African American female physician. Born in the post-slavery era and raised in Aiken County, she became a leading advocate for improved healthcare access and civic rights for African American communities, with a particular focus on children, during the era of racial segregation. The presentation explores how her early experiences, strong faith, and innovative medical practices helped expand healthcare accessibility for underserved families and secure her lasting legacy in Southern history.
The event will take place on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at River House at River Island. This program is free and open to the public.
