Call for Public Art at McBean Park, Hephzibah GA

Augusta, GA – Call for Public Art at McBean Park, Hephzibah GA

The Greater Augusta Arts Council announces a call for public art proposals for McBean Park, located in Hephzibah, GA. The community that utilizes the park is seeking for artists to create one to three (1-3) engaging and whimsical chess tables, as well as seating, for patrons of the Park. This project is funded by a grant made to the Arts Council by the Junior League of Augusta.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

McBean Park is located in rural Hephzibah and serves children, families and senior citizens. The City of Augusta Recreation and Parks wants to engage the patrons of the park in activities that are “multi-generational.”

Senior citizens who visit the park had previously requested that the staff install chess tables for their entertainment. Rather than install plain cement tables and benches, Recreation and Parks saw this as an opportunity to enliven the park with public art and engaged the Greater Augusta Arts Council for assistance. Conversations with staff, volunteers, local artists, and patrons of the park revealed that artistically designed chess sets would encourage inter-generational play between younger and older residents.

HOW TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL

The applications for public art at McBean Park are open until October 1, 2019. The stipend provided to artists, provided by a grant from the Junior League of Augusta, is $1,000, and includes supplies. Artists can design 1 to 3 tables, within the allotted funds. Interested artists should visit the link below to read the call in its entirety. Any questions should be sent to Project Manager Pax Bobrow at [email protected].
