02 Mar “No Longer Strangers” reception March 16
“Thursday, March 16, 6-8pm a reception will be held for the exhibition, ?No Longer Strangers,? at the Ann and Ellis Johnson Gallery of Art at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts. Produced by the participants of the first ?Business of Being An Artist? GHIA workshop series, this exhibit will hang at the Ann and Ellis Johnson Gallery March 10-18.
Presented in partnership with the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art and the Greater Augusta Arts Council, the course was an expansion of the Arts Council?s ?Aspiration? series held through 2015 & 2016. 9 artists have attended the 8 weeks of intensive classes facilitated by local instructor Freida Dean, who guided them through best practices of producing and promoting a professional exhibition. They have come together to produce a show that spans their varying styles and experiences.
?No Longer Strangers,? as described by the participating artists:
An ambitious group of artists focused on community aim to enrich the vibrancy of our local art scene. Compelled to create, these 9 artists crave the sanctuary of their creative spaces and seek understanding through their work.
Their collective motives add up to one universal virtue of growth ? both creatively and professionally. Nurtured through collaboration with our local resources, the artists have experienced a six week retreat of learning and excavating their most authentic selves. The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, in partnership with Greater Augusta Arts Council, have provided a neutral space to allow for self examination, group collaboration, and the building of camaraderie between the 9 artists who are no longer strangers.
In a world sometimes skewed towards division, art can bring us together.
The Arts Council thanks Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art and their Education Coordinator, Erica Pastecki, for their work in making this workshop series possible. The Arts Council also thanks the Jessye Norman School of the Arts for use of the gallery space for the final gallery show. Fees for the class were made affordable for emerging artists through a grant, written by the Arts Council, from the Creel-Harison Foundation.
