The Augusta Housing and Community Development Department, in collaboration with the City of Augusta, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, and the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History and Conference Center, is thrilled to announce the ribbon-cutting ceremony and community presentation of the Pillars of the Golden Blocks Sculpture at the Twiggs Circle Roundabout.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Twiggs Circle Roundabout in Augusta. The sculpture, a magnificent creation by the talented artist Ashley Gray, stands as a symbol of unity, resilience, and cultural richness within our community. Inspired by Dr. Pollard’s book “Segregated Doctoring,” the Pillars of the Golden Blocks Sculpture embodies the spirit of collaboration and community upliftment. The vision for this extraordinary artwork was fostered by the Lucy Craft Laney Museum and the Committee for the Golden Blocks, who played instrumental roles in coordinating this effort.

In addition, representatives from the Augusta Housing Authority worked closely with residents from Allen Homes, Powell Pointe, and MM Scott to ensure a consensus in the selection of this piece. Their dedication and commitment reflect the collective spirit of our community. Funding for this remarkable project was generously provided by the Georgia Rehabilitation Institute, highlighting their commitment to supporting the arts and community development initiatives in Augusta.

We are excited to unveil the Pillars of the Golden Blocks Sculpture, a testament to the strength and vibrancy of our community. This project celebrates our rich cultural heritage and represents a collaborative effort to enhance our cityscape. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and community presentation will be graced by the presence of esteemed local community leaders, family members of the honored individuals, the artist Ashley Gray, and invited guests and friends. It promises to be a memorable occasion filled with celebration, reflection, and appreciation for the arts and community spirit.

We invite members of the media and the community to join us in commemorating this significant milestone and celebrating the Pillars of the Golden Blocks Sculpture, a symbol of unity and pride for the City of Augusta. Closing remarks will be given by Hawthorne Welcher, Director of Augusta Housing and Community Development.
