POW! People of Wonder Black History Exhibit in the City Gallery at 535 Telfair St. Augusta, GA 30901
Augusta, GA – An exhibition of images from the Mayoral Collection of Black History alongside progress
prints of the upcoming Golden Blocks Legends comic book is mow on display in the City Gallery for Black History Month. POW! People of Wonder will be on display the City Gallery, which is managed by the Greater Augusta Arts Council and is located in the lobby of the Augusta-Richmond County Municipal
Building, from January 6th – March 1st, 2023. A guided tour will be held on Friday, February 24th from
10:00AM – 11:00AM, led by local historian Corey Rogers of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black
History and Dr. Juan Walker, Program Director and Associate Professor in Augusta University’s College of Education and Human Development in the Department of Teaching and Leading.

POW! People of Wonder highlights accomplishments of historic African American communities as well as the individuals who contributed to the progress of Augusta, along with the talents of local artists and writers. Figures such as Lucy Craft Laney and C.T. Walker and businesses such as the Lenox Theatre. The display of photographs alongside the illustrations they inspired in the GBL Comic Book series is an amazing site to see. The Golden Blocks Legends Comic Book Series is set to engage readers in a new way. This series of comic books will be an adventure into Augusta’s Black History where readers will be able to learn more about iconic figures who made great strides for our local community. The GBL project is a collaborative effort by several local groups and individuals, including the Lucy Craft Laney Museum, Richmond County School System, The Augusta University Literacy Center, AU’s Department of Art, Teaching and Leading, and The Dean’s Office, The Hub and artists Art the Artist Abdon & A’Shaela Abdon. The Mayoral Collection of Black History is displayed annually in the City Gallery for Black History Month. Gallery Director Heather Dunaway decided to extend and expand upon this annual showcase. After a tour of the Hub, she was able to learn more about the Golden Blocks Legends Comic Book and asked to incorporate some of their prints into POW! People of Wonder with the goal of highlighting the talents and creativity of Augusta’s authors and illustrators alongside the photographs that inspired them.
