WHAT IS THE AUGUSTA SCULPTURE TRAIL?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Augusta discovered the importance of outdoor experiences. Augustan’s couldn’t travel, but were able to explore their own city in new ways. The Greater Augusta Arts Council, as the City’s Public Art Agency, proposed to create an outdoor public sculpture trail, featuring local to national artists, to give Augustan’s and visitors something more to enjoy about our great city. An art trail that would highlight and add to the beauty of historic Downtown Augusta and the Riverwalk. So, in 2021, the first itertion of the Augusta Sculpture Trail was installed. Every two years, 10 sculptures are brought to Augusta, on loan from artists from across the US, with all sculptures available for purchase for permanent installation. Since 2021, Augusta has seen 3 iterations and has grown the trail to 18 sculptures with 8 being permanent installations.

WHY ARE WE VOTING?

Your vote helps the Public Art Advisory Panel determine which sculpture to put forth to the commission for approval of purchase and permanent placement within our city’s public art collection. We want to hear from YOU on which piece or pieces you would like to see stay on the Augusta Sculpture Trail. Help us grow our public art scene!

WHY IS ACCESSIBLE PUBLIC ART SO IMPORTANT?

Accessible public art is important in a community because it brings art into everyday life in a way that everyone can experience, regardless of background or income. When art is placed in shared public spaces, it helps shape a community’s identity, inspires pride, and creates opportunities for connection, whether it’s with the environment or each other. It also plays a meaningful role as an economic driver. Statistics prove that well-designed public art can attract visitors, support cultural tourism, increase foot traffic in local businesses, and contribute to the revitalization of public spaces. Over time, these installations can help strengthen a city’s cultural profile while also generating measurable economic benefits through increased engagement and investment in surrounding areas. Art is for everyone, and that means you too.

WHERE DO THE FUNDS COME FROM?

Funds used to purchase art come from multiple avenues; including grants the Arts Council applys for, private donors and collectiors, and the City of Augusta. Artworks purchased from this trail are considered an investment into the city’s cultural landscape and local economy. Where there is art, there is impact, whether its community or economic.
