Meet Lexi Colon
Meet Lexie Colon, a dedicated young dancer who has been in love with the art form since the age of four. Now heading into the eighth grade, Lexie’s passion for dance has grown stronger year after year. “I have and do love to dance,” she shares simply. “That’s about nine years now.”
Lexie balances her academics and her art with impressive discipline. Before school, she packs everything she needs for dance, and after school, she heads straight to class. “If I have homework that I need to complete, I’ll take a short break until I’m finished,” she says, showing a maturity well beyond her years.
Her journey in dance began unexpectedly, thanks to a pivotal moment. “Before I was doing dance, I started with cheerleading. One day, my mom took me to a dance class. I loved it so much that I decided to do that instead of cheer. If my mom didn’t take me to that class, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
Since then, her growth has been steady and full of perseverance. “There have been ups and downs,” Lexie admits, “but I’ve improved a lot from going to classes. I even joined the competition team in 2021–2022 and again from 2024–2025
Lexie finds inspiration in the world around her. “Just watching other people, learning about them, or even watching movies about dance makes me want to dance more,” she says. Her process is all about dedication and asking for help when she needs it. “As my teachers say, ‘practice makes progress.’”
Preparation is key for Lexie. Before every performance, she reviews her choreography, goes over her corrections, and stretches—something she says is essential to be able to do all the moves. Her favorite styles are musical theatre and hip hop. “Both allow me to express myself and be who I am,” she explains. “They require high energy and a lot of expressions, which I love because it makes the dances fun.”
Lexie’s goals reflect a true artist’s spirit. “One goal I have is to be how good I want myself to be. I want to work hard to get the skills I want, so I can feel proud of myself.” As for dream performances, Disney World is high on her list—“because it would be cool to do that… and I could go on the rides afterwards!”
While she sees dance as a personal passion rather than a career path right now, it’s clearly a central part of her life. “It makes me look forward to dancing every day,” she says.
Being chosen as the Emerging Youth Featured Artist of the Month is a meaningful moment for Lexie. “It means a great deal to me. I feel proud to have gotten chosen and am very excited to be answering these questions.”
Like many young artists, Lexie has faced challenges. She’s taken breaks for personal reasons but continued to stretch and practice to stay ready. Her advice to others? “Don’t give up until you’re completely sure you want to or need to. I’ve come close to giving up, but I learned that if I just practice instead, it makes me feel better and improved.”
When asked to describe her art in three words, Lexie doesn’t hesitate: “fun, artistic, and creative.” One of her proudest moments came when she was awarded Dancer of the Year at her studio—“I feel so proud of myself for achieving that award, and I still am.”
Lexie finds motivation in her peers, especially her best friend Paisley, who inspires her through her dedication and skill. Outside of dance, Lexie enjoys painting. “I’m not that great at it,” she says modestly, “but watching people paint makes me want to practice more.”
If she could collaborate with anyone, it would be her friend Bailey. “We both love musical theatre and jazz and are on about the same level, so I think that doing a duo with her would be very fun.”
We’re so proud to celebrate Lexie Colon as our Emerging Youth Featured Artist of the Month. Her dedication, joy, and resilience remind us just how powerful and inspiring young voices in the arts can be.
