Our December Featured Artist, Nina Thompson, has been creating for as long as she can remember. She grew up with a natural pull toward working with her hands, supported by a mom whose own creativity shaped and encouraged her from childhood into adulthood. What once felt like a simple hobby eventually transformed into something much bigger. Creativity became a career, a calling, and a source of purpose.
Nina’s artistic discipline is fashion, with a focus on costume design and styling. She has always loved art forms that challenge or enhance the idea of beauty, and her love for TV and film drew her to the visual storytelling that clothing can deliver. Fashion became the perfect place where imagination and character meet.
She stays motivated because nothing else has ever challenged or fulfilled her in the same way. For a time, she tried to push away what she was meant to do because it didn’t fit the mold of traditional success. But once she fully committed to her craft, she recognized the deep value of creating both for herself and for her community. Inspiration comes from everywhere, whether it is something close to home or a scene set in a completely made-up universe.
Fashion gives her the freedom to blend fantasy and reality.Even though she has always been crafty, Nina approaches her work with a scientific lens. With a degree in biology and years of sewing experience, she finds that the technical side of garment construction fits her perfectly.
Every piece begins with an idea and a clear plan of action. There are steps to follow, trial and error to work through, and fittings to get the perfect result. Once the garment is finished, the final step is bringing it to life through styling and personal expression.
To Nina, sewing is the ideal balance of creative vision and technical mastery. It requires imagination to design something original and the skill to turn fabric into a three-dimensional work of art. She thinks about body proportions, how fabric moves, and how a garment functions in real life.
Working at Ensemble Sewing and Costumes has been an incredible part of her journey. It allows her to learn and create at the same time, while strengthening her knowledge of fashion history, styling, and storytelling. She is especially proud of designing custom costumes and bringing a client’s vision to life through her craftsmanship.Nina is also honest about the realities of her trade.
Sewing and garment construction have historically been undervalued, often dismissed as “women’s work” tied to generations of women of color. That history continues to affect wages and perceptions today. Still, she believes the tides are turning. As sewing becomes a dying art, people are finally beginning to recognize its value.
Sustainability has always been at the heart of Nina’s work. Her mission is to promote slow fashion by repurposing old garments, encouraging second-hand shopping, and advocating for well-made clothing that lasts. She hopes to divert textiles from landfills and inspire others to get creative with reworking clothes they no longer see as trendy.
Looking ahead, Nina hopes to dive deeper into costume design for theater and film. She wants to help shape entire worlds through character design, and she is excited to collaborate with local theaters. She also hopes to grow her work in commercial photography, partnering with other creatives on styling, set design, and props.

She dreams of learning new fabric manipulation techniques and bringing even more texture and shape to second-hand materials. Wearable art for everyday life has been her focus, but she wants to push herself even further. One day, she hopes to create a garment that feels truly avant-garde and otherworldly, something meant not for daily wear but for pure imaginative expression.
Nina Thompson’s work is a reminder that fashion can be both beautiful and thoughtful, both imaginative and responsible. From breathing new life into discarded materials to envisioning entire worlds through costume design, she brings intention, curiosity, and heart to everything she creates. We’re proud to celebrate her as our December Featured Artist and can’t wait to see where her craft takes her next.
