Meet Katherine Carr: Our Young Emerging Artist for January!
The Greater Augusta Arts Council is thrilled to introduce the witty, vibrant, and unapologetically creative Katherine Carr as our Youth Emerging Artist for January! A senior at Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School, Katherine has mastered the art of juggling AP classes, college applications, and a deep passion for creative writing often while simultaneously brainstorming her next great story in the back of her mind.
Katherine’s love affair with words began early, inspired by her mom’s heartfelt, poetic birthday cards. “I never knew language could be so beautiful,” she reminisces, a realization that kickstarted her journey into storytelling. Starting as a poetry purist, Katherine has since expanded her repertoire, recently completing her first screenplay. “I never thought I’d do that,” she admits, proving she’s not one to let creative boundaries box her in.
When it comes to inspiration, Katherine is a firm believer in writing what she knows. Whether it’s personal experiences or the faint squeak of sneakers during a neighborhood run, she draws from life’s simplest (and quirkiest) moments. Her creative process? A no-nonsense approach: she sets a timer, freewrites her heart out, and edits later. “You can’t revise a blank page,” she declares a mantra all writers could tattoo on their souls.
Her artistic philosophy mirrors her admiration for rule-breakers like Rupi Kaur. “There’s no rulebook for creative writing,” Katherine says, relishing the freedom to challenge norms and embrace uniqueness. It’s this boldness that earned her the District Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition win in 10th grade for her poignant piece I Remember.
Katherine dreams big. She plans to join a college literature and arts magazine, participate in writers’ workshops, and, fingers crossed, publish her work someday. While she sees writing as a personal passion, her resume is already impressive: she’s the Head Writer of Junior Justices, a nonprofit blog educating teens about their legal rights.
When she’s not writing, Katherine can be found running, binge-watching old movies, or obsessing over Wordle. These hobbies aren’t just for fun; they help clear her head and refresh her creativity. She draws inspiration from poet Kristin Chang, whose raw, unfiltered language reminds her to write for healing, not just applause.
Being selected as the Youth Emerging Artist is a full-circle moment for Katherine, who credits writing with giving her a voice. “I used to struggle to express myself, but writing gave me an outlet,” she says. Her advice for fellow young creatives? “Stop waiting for the ‘perfect’ idea. Just pick up a pen and start.”
Katherine describes her art as raw, vibrant, and abstract, a fitting reflection of a young writer with a bold voice and endless potential. Join us in celebrating Katherine Carr, a storyteller who proves that words, when used just right, can change the world.
