Arts Adventures: Farmhouse Fabrics

I love a good shopping session for my crafts and hobbies and in an attempt to spend more local dollars on my sewing projects I recently stumbled upon Farmhouse Fabrics. This shop is a wonderland for crafters in so many ways. Is there another local business you can think of where you can get fabric, baking supplies and high-end craft bits under one roof?
This place is a treasure for our community—and beyond, thanks to their online sales—yet I’ve never seen anyone really talk about it. My first interaction with this company was well after COVID-19 came to the US and the country went under lockdown. I was excited to find a local hobby store that carried nice fabrics and tailor’s tools while I was deep in the middle of a sewing project.
That first experience was so interesting and remarkable. I called the store to see if there was any in-person shopping and was told that all purchases had to be made through the website. I was disappointed not to be able to go and feel the fabrics and see the notions in person but I was pleased that this business was taking safety seriously after many other businesses had started to reopen. At the time of this article, November 2020, there is still no in-person shopping at Farmhouse Fabrics.
The first thing I always tell people about Farmhouse Fabrics is that there is a porch pickup option for local orders. This is a favorite feature as I hate shipping costs on top of a purchase price, especially when it’s for non-essential hobby supplies.
The staff put a lot of time into their digital community as well. They actively post on Instagram, almost every day, with featured items and videos of deliveries and exciting new merchandise. At the end of October the staff posted on Instagram that they were holding an eight-day craft kit sale where each day a new children’s craft kit would be marked down to $1. I immediately knew that I wanted to purchase all eight. I called and asked if I could have all eight in one order.
I was able to place an order for all the craft kits within 10 minutes of making that call and my order was ready in less than 30 minutes after completing the online purchase. I drove to the shop, in Beech Island almost exactly between downtown Augusta and Aiken, SC.
The shop is a long, narrow building that’s built next to a beautiful old farm house. My craft kit order was ready on the porch, wrapped in a plastic bag with a laminated tag that had my name and order information on it. I’ve shopped with Farmhouse Fabrics a half dozen times since June and I’ve never seen anyone on the porch, but my order is always ready and available to me.
If you’re a hobbyist in Augusta and Aiken I have a feeling you’d find something, if not many things, you’ll love at Farmhouse Fabrics.
