Call for Artists: “The Legacy of Lucy Craft Laney, the Mother of the Children of the People.”

The Greater Augusta Arts Council, in Partnership with the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History announces a call for artists for the next Municipal Building Gallery Exhibition to be held September – November 2017. The Exhibition is titled “The Legacy of Lucy Craft Laney, the Mother of the Children of the People.” Wyatt Johnson, former President of Howard University first honored Ms. Laney with that title.
The gallery seeks submissions from local artist that embodies themes of cultural heritage and historical influence of Lucy Craft Laney. All are welcome. Suggested concepts are art, history, and preservation.
About Lucy Craft Laney and the Museum:
Ms. Laney was the Founder of the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute in Augusta and served as an educational leader for fifty years (1883-1933). The school offered its students a holistic approach to education, but also served as a cultural center for the African-American community. The school hosted orchestra, concerts, lectures, and nationally known African American guests.
Christine Miller-Betts, Executive Director of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History, will serve on the committee who will select the artwork. “Art is a strong part of our mission of the museum’s programming and this event will allow for a phenomenal showcase of how the Augusta community has continued to strengthen Miss Laney’s legacy of art history and preservation. The deadline for the submission period is August 27, 2017. Artists will be notified of the jury selection.
A jury committee made up of representatives of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum and the Greater Augusta Arts Council will select art works from the submissions. Up to 3 pieces can be submitted for consideration.
Selected artwork must be dropped off at the Municipal Building Gallery on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 3pm – 5pm. The Municipal Gallery is located on the floor level of the newly renovation Augusta Richmond County Building at 533 Telfair Street.
Artwork must be fully prepared for professional gallery hanging: wire hung, framed or gallery wrapped canvases. All 2-dimensional medium are permitted for submission.
Label the back of the artwork with contact information, title and price. Please submit a jpeg of the art for consideration. Jpeg should be labeled with artist’s last name and title of piece. Up to 3 pieces can be submitted for consideration.
