09 Jul Canal Seeks Artists for Public Art Project, Deadline August 13

Artists interested in creating works inspired by the history and environment of the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area are encouraged to apply for a public art project commission by August 13. Augusta Canal Authority issued a request for qualifications for the project which offers $14,000 for the selected artist or artists’ team.
‘The city’s new public art plan cited the canal as a prime location for an art walk, art installations and presentations,’ explained Rebecca Rogers, the canal’s director of marketing and lead staff for the art project. ‘We hope this will be the beginning of a series of public art activities along the canal.’
Suggested locations are at the canal’s Mill Village or Lake Olmstead trailheads or along one of the canal’s trails. The work can have permanent, semi-permanent or temporary elements. The work will be unveiled next April in observance of National Parks Week, Rogers noted.
The project is funded by a grant from the Porter Fleming Foundation and the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area through program funds of the National Park Service.
Preference will be given to regional artists (Georgia, South Carolina, or southeastern US) or those with strong connections to the Augusta area (former students, former residents, family connections.) Following a review of qualifications, four finalists will be chosen to develop detailed proposals. First round applications are due by 2 p.m. August 13.”
