Public Art in the news – 3 upcoming projects spotlighted by media

Via AugustaChronicle.com, Public Art to Bloom in Augusta – “It can be called “yarn bombing” or “graffitti with yarn.” But in downtown Augusta next weekend, it will be an elaborate and colorful “Enchanted Forest.”
The extensive yarn and woven installation that will cover Ninth Street and parts of 10th Street beginning Friday is just one of the public art installations approved last week by the Augusta Commission after extensive vetting and work with city officials and the Greater Augusta Arts Council.
It includes Augusta artist Larry Millard’s 10-foot metal arch sculpture that will go into A.L. Williams Park in Harrisburg and is an homage and tribute to that neighborhood.”

Via WRDW.com, AU Art Professor Brings History Back to the Canal– “If you head to the Augusta Canal trail anytime soon, you might notice something different. A local artist is creating the canals’ first piece of public art.
You could say AU professor of art and humanities Brian Rust was meant to be an artist. In fact, it runs in his family.
‘A lot of these things you do — public art. They’re celebrations of community,’ said Rust.”

Artist Reception: Randy Akers at the City Gallery, May 1, 11:30am-1pm
Join us for a reception celebrating the work of Randy Akers at the City Gallery, next Wednesday May 1, 11:30-1pm at the Augusta Municipal Building at 535 Telfair St.
Akers, whose work made up the first solo artist show at the City Gallery, is a visual artist based in Skidaway Island. He has shown at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, University of New Mexico’s Harwood Foundation, Philadelphia Art Museum, Anchorage Art Museum, University of North Carolina, Valdosta University Art Museum, Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, LaGrange Art Museum, Ormond Memorial Art Museu, and Maryland Federation of Art, amont others. Akers received an Ats Residency at Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts in 2015, 2019 and at Foundation OBRAS, Portugal, in 2017. In addition, Three Paintings were recently chosen for the upcoming movie, “The Poison Rose,” starring John Travolta, Morgan Freeman, and Brendan Frasier.
Akers has taught at the School of Visual Arts, the Savannah College of Art and Design, and Cazenovia College. He received his M.F.S. at the Savannah College of Art and Design; B.F.A., Chouninard Art Institute, California Institute of the Arts; additional academic work at Art Center College of Design, California State university Northridge and University of Oregon. He serves on the advisory council for ArtsGeorgia, and is a member of the Director’s Guild of America.

-Learn how to connect with city leaders in order to add your creative voice to discussions about Community Development in Augusta.
-Do you have a cause you are passionate about? Learn how to use your artistic practice to bring light to the issues you are concerned with.
-Grow your creative network by meeting and learning from fellow Augusta-based artists.
-Touch base with the national arts scene – speakers will share a national view of art in community development efforts as well as examples from similar cities.
This will be a FREE workshop led by ArtsU by Americans for the Arts – with featured Augusta-based artists as speakers.

The Harrisburg Neighborhood residents who live near Hillside Park, located at 2101 Telfair Street are seeking to spark positive community change through art at their beloved neighborhood park. Artists can submit concepts to enhance the park with public art.

Westobou information sessions for “Idea Generated Projects” grant applicants, April 18 & 25
Via Westobou.com – “Westobou is seeking proposals for three different projects (listed below). Individuals, groups and organizations are invited to submit proposals to one or more of these projects. Those chosen will be sponsored up to $1,000 (per project) to implement the project during Westobou Festival, October 2-6, 2019. Selected projects will be promoted and documented by Westobou. If selected, money will be distributed prior to the Festival to allow sufficient time for preparation/completion.
Info Sessions: Join the Westobou team for info sessions about the idea generated projects and let us tell you how to amplify your application.
