Opera Singer Jessye Norman chosen as first female, African American Glenn Gould Laureate

Via www.GlennGould.ca – World-renowned opera singer and native Augustan Jessye Norman was just announced as the latest Glenn Gould Laureate, making her not only the first woman selected for the honor, but also the first African American. The prize, named after famed Canadian pianist Glenn Gould, is “awarded to an individual for a unique lifetime contribution that has enriched the human condition through the arts.” Norman is known worldwide for her accomplishments as a soprano and a champion of the arts. In Augusta, she established the Jessye Norman School of the Arts, which continues to provide high quality, tuition-free after-school arts training for students. Acclaimed actor Viggo Mortensen, chair of the Glenn Gould Prize Jury, said in a press release published by the Glenn Gould Foundation on April 16, “We were united in our admiration for the Twelfth Glenn Gould Prize Laureate, the incomparable Jessye Norman.” Glenn Gould Foundation Executive Director Brian Levine said, “All of us at the Glenn Gould Foundation are beyond thrilled at the inspired selection made by this year’s jury, Jessye Norman.”
Norman, who received the news firsthand via a telephone call, said of the honor, “To have been chosen to receive this auspicious recognition is quite simply breath-taking!” Augusta can be very proud of Jessye Norman and the work she has done in opera and the arts around the world!

Nominate a leader in the arts for a 2018 Arts Award!
Nominations are open for the Annual Arts Awards, a program by the Greater Augusta Arts Council to recognize leadership and excellence in the arts. Six categories honor the different aspects of a thriving arts community:
Individual Artist, Arts Professional/administrator, Volunteer, Media, Sponsor, and new this year, the Kath Girdler Engler Public Art Award.
The Deadline for nominations is Thursday, May 10th at 5pm. The Awards Dinner will take place June 21, with tickets available in May.

Chamber Gallery: “Entangled: Artwork by Colleen Beyer”
Artwork by Colleen Beyer Stewart is now on display at the Chamber Gallery, located inside the Chamber of Commerce offices at 1 Tenth St.
From colleenbeyerstewart.com – Colleen received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from the University of West Georgia and a Master of Fine Arts from Georgia Southern University. Colleen now resides in Augusta, Georgia. She is the visual arts teacher at Harlem High School.

Teaching Artist Registry by GCA – application deadline April 27
“Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) is currently accepting applications for the Georgia Teaching Artists Registry. The agency is seeking to expand the number of artists on the registry to serve more schools and organizations, as well as to include greater artistic diversity and geographic reach throughout the state. Qualified teaching artists must be a resident of Georgia, must have a combination of training in their artistic field and experience in educational settings, and must be able to pass a background check.”
Artists who are part of the registry qualify for participation in select Georgia Council grant opportunities and are listed on the GCA website for those seeking experienced arts educators.
